Greener and Cleaner, part 2
CSA Group's A Journey to Carbon Neutrality

This is the second instalment of a serialized case study documenting CSA Group's progress to carbon neutrality. Follow along and apply learnings to your own organization.

Taking Action, Collecting Data

After setting out a corporate commitment and mobilizing a team of people from across the company, CSA Group was ready to dive into data. This was by far the most intricate and time-consuming part of the process, but by carefully documenting sources of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and researching credible measurement tools, the team was able to construct a meaningful and verifiable accounting of carbon performance.

For reasons of practicality, data availability and economy, organizational boundaries were limited in the first pass to CSA Group's North American operations covering FY 2006-2007. (The company has since extended its journey to embrace all operations worldwide.)

  • Be practical and set realistic boundaries for data collection
  • Identify all sources of GHG emissions, using ISO 14064 for guidance

May "Confused by Carbon" webinar series topic: Standardizing and Professionalizing GHG Accounting and Reporting

Some of the challenges in measuring and reporting an organization's carbon footprint occur because of the different standards, protocols and methodologies that are available. Key learnings over the past few years have also demonstrated a wide variability in the quality of GHG data and created a need for qualified staff who are able to calculate and report accurate GHG emissions.
